What is Software?
Software is the programs and applications that are used on a computer.
You cannot physically touch software.
Software is made using code.
Without software a computer would be a useless collection of plastic and metal. It wouldn’t be able to take input, process it, output it or store anything!
Operating Systems
An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer.
It manages all of the hardware and other software.
Examples include Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS, Android.
Operating System User Interfaces
A user interface refers to the way in which the software allows the user to interact with the computer system.
Many operating systems often have a graphical user interface (GUI). These have features such as windows, icons, menus and a sometimes a mouse pointer (cursor).
GUIs are seen as a user friendly type of interface.
Some operating systems have a command-line interface and others have a voice operating interface (like Alexa)
Application Software
Application software are the programs installed on a computer that allow the user to perform useful tasks.
Examples include web browsers, word processors, videogames, email clients , social media apps etc.
