What is the Internet?

The Internet is the largest WAN in the world. It connects millions of computers together globally.

The Internet provides many services:

  • World Wide Web
  • Emails
  • Online Banking
  • Online Shopping
  • Social Media
  • Video Streaming
  • Music Streaming
  • Online Gaming
  • Satellite Navigation (Google Maps)

You can see that life would be very different without the Internet!


IP Addresses

Every device connected to the Internet has a unique IP Address.
 

This is a number that can be used to send data to the correct device 
(A bit like your home address).

It is written in four parts (each separated by a dot). Each part is any number between 1-255


The World Wide Web

The World Wide Web is a part of the Internet.

They are not the same thing! The WWW is just one of those many services provided by the Internet

The World Wide Web is a collection of HTML websites that are stored on web servers.

These websites are accessed by using a web browser.


Web Browsers

web browser is a type of software that allows you to use the World Wide Web. 

It makes requests to web servers for you so that the data  can be downloaded and displayed in the browser. 


Search Engines

search engine allows you to find websites by using certain phrases and key terms.

The search engine uses a complex algorithm that to provide the results in an order it thinks is most suitable.
